Magic System
Magic System
Current canon. The system should stay legible through objects, bodily costs, and repeated behavior rather than exposition.
The Short Version
The Flare seeded resonance unevenly through the world. Under sufficient exposure, an irreversible transition can pattern that already-present resonance into a person's passive and a materially involved object's Imprint. A compatible passive and Imprint create a pull; bonding through it makes a unique Deviation deliberately accessible. Every deliberate use exacts a material cost.
The Flare
The Flare happened once, five years before the story. It seeded resonance unevenly into the world. Most dissipated, while certain locations, substrates, and relatively closed natural systems retained unusually high concentrations.
Irreversible transitions do not generate fresh resonance. Under sufficient exposure, they pattern resonance already present in the person, object, or environment. The exact threshold varies by substrate. People, objects, living things, water, and other materials retain or express the same seeded phenomenon differently according to what they are.
A single event can pattern both the person undergoing or enacting the transition and objects materially involved in it. Exposure is not a guarantee: a resonant event may leave no perceptible passive or significant Imprint.
The island's volcanic water retains an unusually high concentration because the Sacred Water loop circulates through a largely closed natural system. Its circulation can periodically produce conditions in which new manifestations remain possible five years after the Flare. Whether the reservoir is depleting, persistent, or periodically inert—and how correction and stasis affect its circulation—remains unsettled.
The Flare does not recur. Present-day manifestations pattern its surviving resonance rather than creating more.
Resonance is not a moral judgment or a measure of human worth. The state turned an uneven physical phenomenon into a class of people called Deviants.
Passive, Pull, and Deviation
Passive. A person's involuntary, uncontrolled resonance. Its ordinary expression is personal; the owner is the only person who directly perceives it. There is no public technical term inside the story, so names such as the Ghost and Static are personal.
Pull. When a person's passive resonance meets a compatible, strongly resonant Imprint, the interaction creates an unmistakable attraction. The pull indicates compatibility, not instructions or guaranteed safety.
Deviation. Bonding with an Imprint through its pull can make a person's deliberate ability accessible. The Imprint does not contain a preset power. The Deviation belongs to the person and is unique to that bonded relationship.
The relationship is:
passive resonance → compatible-Imprint pull → bonded unique Deviation
Imprints
An Imprint is an object whose existing resonance was patterned by an irreversible transition. It carries the completed shape of what happened around it, not an ability waiting to be collected.
Resonance is strongest when an Imprint's completed transition and a person's unresolved transition share an emotional or behavioral shape. An Imprint can accumulate more than one layer of resonance over time.
A bonded Imprint is required for deliberate use of a Deviation. Lose it and the person returns to passive-only expression until it is recovered or another object resonates strongly enough to form a bond.
The bond is a resonant relationship, not an autobiographical recollection. Removing a person's memory of finding, bonding with, or learning an Imprint does not by itself erase an established bond.
Deliberate Expressions
A bonded Imprint can sustain only one deliberate expression of its Deviation at a time. Developed forms are alternate uses of the same bonded relationship, not additional powers layered over the base form. They normally remain available alongside the base expression, but the user cannot sustain base and advanced expressions simultaneously as independent effects.
Practical applications of a single expression — the specific ways its effect is applied in the moment — are facets of that expression, not separate powers. The Pursuer's Sheath, Vent, vapor-shaping, and projectile defense are one vapor-control expression applied four ways, never four simultaneous abilities.
Under extreme emotional or physical pressure, a passive may briefly break into the world without an Imprint. This is uncontrolled, difficult to repeat, and severely costly. Roxana's spark in the prison is the main example.
Imprinted objects remain physically ordinary unless a specified effect changes them. Their supernatural significance does not automatically make them indestructible.
Costs
Every Deviation pays through the same system the user employs. Cost scales with use and cannot be bypassed. Advanced forms may transform a cost, but do not erase it.
Rain's ordinary Clone disrupts sensory anchoring; Perfect Clone impairs felt authorship and action initiation.
Claire pays through neurological and computational overload: Visual Calculus and Convergence run impossible computation on biological hardware.
Roxana's flame heightens nociceptive sensitivity; Starborne suppresses normal pain gating.
The Pursuer burns the wanting that once drove him.
Vesper's high-fidelity memory system suffers increasing replay, interference, and source confusion as foreign records accumulate.
Rain's longer or more complex Clone use escalates from blur and ringing through disorientation, proprioceptive instability, severe sensory degradation, and collapse.
Roxana's Starborne suppresses normal pain gating; ungated pain can trigger withdrawal, involuntary tension or release, shaking, disrupted breathing, nausea, disorientation, and collapse, and mental toughness cannot simply overrule those responses.
For Claire, load increases with the number and complexity of variables, the duration of the model, the bodily cost of executing a prediction, and repeated use before recovery. Light use produces fatigue and neurological symptoms. Heavy use causes tremor, slowed processing, weakness, disorientation, or collapse. Extreme overuse can leave her helpless and unconscious, with each severe episode risking a longer coma. Seeing is cheaper than executing; calculation alone never wins a fight.
Deviations do not permanently rewrite the physical world. Vesper's alteration of memory and identity is the exception, and correction falls under it: what his hands extract and what the loop thins are both permanently gone.
Correction
Correction is Vesper's own faculty delivered through infrastructure instead of through his hands. The apparatus at the caldera vents the effect into the Sacred Water loop, and the loop carries it through the city's supply. What he does to one person at contact range, the loop does to a district at exposure range.
The water is the contact. That is why correction needs no touch, and it is also why correction is imprecise where his hands are precise. His hands can isolate one memory-network; the loop cannot, so what a corrected district loses is wanting in general — the appetite for a thing rather than the record of it. A corrected district is not emptied. Its residents continue, and stop initiating.
Boundary. The boundary is the edge of the loop's current reach. It is measured rather than decreed: it moves as circulation carries the effect further, and a full lap of the Circuit Line makes the change legible by showing the same stations in two different states.
Apparatus. The correction apparatus is an installation at the caldera, coupled to the loop. It is physically ordinary, and it is the only thing that makes correction city-scale. Vesper corrects a person; the apparatus corrects a city. Breaking it stops the loop carrying the effect. Vesper survives its destruction.
On the person. Exposure degrades wanting in proportion to time and concentration. It is gradual, and it is not extraction: nothing is stored, nothing is carried away, and no one can read what a corrected person has lost. Removal from exposure is the only thing that slows it.
Correction requires Vesper's faculty and the loop together. Neither alone corrects a district.
Correction removes wanting, not memory. A corrected person can still say what happened and cannot say what they want.
Correction is not reversible by Vesper. He can restore what he extracted. He cannot restore what the loop thinned.
The apparatus is the objective because it is the only city-scale component.
Extraction and Glass
Vesper extracts a coherent autobiographical memory or connected memory-network through direct contact. There is no one-extraction-per-person limit. Repeated extractions become harder to isolate because memories share context and identity.
His precision determines whether he removes the intended network cleanly or damages related function. Early imprecision can damage related function; later treatment can leave flawless function while removing the wants and associations that made that function personal.
Intact Shard and Archive
An intact shard is external memory storage. It is a resonantly continuous manifestation associated with Vesper's prism, not a finite chip broken from it. There is no built-in shard count; extraction difficulty, storage, interference, and cognitive burden provide the practical limits.
The original owner cannot access the extracted memory.
Vesper can consciously access its context, chronology, emotion, and learned information.
The memory remains separate from him and can be restored.
The archive protects shards from accidental or deliberate shattering.
Intact shards give Vesper understanding. He may reproduce something a record teaches him, but it remains a conscious use of external evidence.
Foreign records remain separate, but they share Vesper's unusually high-fidelity retrieval architecture while connected to him. At low load they intrude as replay, association, phrasing, gesture, or ordinary neurological strain. At higher load, immediate retrieval and source discrimination become noisy even when the stored records remain accurate. Under extreme load, Vesper may briefly be unable to trust which record supplied a thought or behavior.
Shatter
Shattering a shard returns the memory to its original owner. Vesper permanently loses access to that record.
Melt
Melt destroys the autobiographical memory for both the original owner and Vesper. It cannot be restored.
What may remain in Vesper is involuntary procedural or behavioral residue:
habits and reflexes;
practiced movement;
speech rhythms;
instinctive reactions;
bodily preferences or mannerisms.
He remembers performing the Melt and can infer where a foreign behavior came from. He cannot recover the destroyed memory that explains it. Melt does not transfer the original emotion, relationship, worldview, Deviation, or lived meaning.
Vesper cannot choose the exact residue with certainty. Deep repetition and emotional intensity make a behavior more likely to survive, but the result is partly unknowable. Melt trades understanding and reversibility for permanent embodied residue; it is rare rather than a superior form of archiving.
What This Changes
Magic is not a collectible power set. It is a record of irreversible transition, a person's relationship to that record, and a cost paid through the system being used.
Factual access and felt ownership remain distinct. Accurate access to a completed record does not automatically make it feel personally inhabited, and loss of ownership does not make the record inaccurate.
Vesper cannot extract a want as a separate object. He removes the memories and associations that sustain it. Repeated removal can leave function intact while making a person unable to say what they want to do with that function.
Rain's Final Extraction
Vesper succeeds completely. Direct contact extracts 100% of Rain's autobiographical target: every lived relationship, fear, choice, emotion, and connected context up to contact. There is no shield, hidden soul, secret autobiographical fragment, incomplete extraction, or protagonist immunity. Vesper's prism contains the finished past in full.
Rain remains factually informed because Arc 3 repeatedly trained his mind through life → completion → life subsequently known as story. That made semantic knowledge unusually independent from autobiographical ownership. The Perfect Clone deepened the same fracture by leaving accurate outcome without felt accomplishment. Those are downstream encodings outside Vesper's autobiographical target, not resistance to it.
The goggles remain bonded after extraction. The bond is resonant rather than autobiographical, so surviving semantic and procedural knowledge can still let Rain understand and deliberately use them after the lived memory of doing so is gone.
Afterward, “I remember meeting Roxana” is gone. “Rain met Roxana” remains. Rain can recount the adventure precisely and cannot inhabit it as something that happened to him. The void's small non-branching acts do not restore the old identity or ownership; they create new consequences after the finished record ends.
Vesper therefore wins the extraction and still loses the immediate physical exchange. His evidence is accurate; his error is believing a completed account authorizes the next response. A finished record is necessarily behind the present.
Constraints
The Flare was one event; it does not recur or distribute a fixed set of powers.
Irreversible transitions do not create resonance. Under sufficient exposure they pattern resonance seeded by the Flare; ordinary motion is insufficient.
A passive expresses involuntary personal resonance. When that resonance meets a compatible Imprint, the interaction creates a pull; bonding through that pull makes the person's unique Deviation accessible. The ability is not preset inside the Imprint.
A bonded Imprint is required for deliberate Deviation use, except for rare uncontrolled and costly passive breakouts.
An established bond survives autobiographical memory loss unless something separately disrupts the resonant relationship.
A bonded Imprint sustains one deliberate expression at a time. Developed forms remain alternatives, not simultaneous additions.
Imprints and shards are physically ordinary unless a specified effect changes them.
Costs are real, scale with use, and cannot be bypassed.
An intact shard is reversible external storage; shatter returns the record; Melt destroys it for both people and leaves no recoverable lived meaning.
