Determinism and the Individual's Infinite Potential
You hold two ideas in uneasy balance: that there's a real deterministic through-line to the world — people running on survival instinct and social conditioning like NPCs on autopilot — and that any individual still has near-infinite potential to change if they choose to. You resist the pull toward writing people off ("maybe their lives were made to be followers") because it feels arrogant coming from someone who hasn't tasted real hardship, yet you can't shake a quiet contempt for unquestioned autopilot living. It's the exact fault line your novel dramatizes: Vesper insists people must be forced to change, and you insist the choice has to be theirs.
